Hi Shirley, we are so grateful to you and Save a Dog for bringing Annie to our lives. Our expectation was that due to her age, arthritis and previous health issues, Annie just needed comfort and love in her twilight. To our delight, that all changed. She gradually became more alive, going on mile+ walks, chasing balls around the yard and learning how to play. One of my favorite memories is one day when Annie was walking down the hall toward my room I ran out and playfully chased her down the hall. At first she didn’t know this was a game , but soon understood and would repeatedly walk down the hall and peak around the door, knowing I would chase her. Games like this were something that she probably had never experienced in her life. She brought so much love and joy to our lives, and though we only had her for a year and half, it made us so happy that we were able to let her know she was so loved until the end. We know people shy away from adopting older dogs because it’s hard to say goodbye , but we find the time we have with these older guys, though shorter than we’d like, is incredibly special and so worthwhile.
Again, thank you for all you do for these wonderful dogs.
Janet and Peter
Note from Shirley:
Annie came to us as Buttercup, an older dog who had endured a rough life and made the trip from the rural midwest to Save A Dog to find her forever home, and boy did she land well. Janet and Peter are two angels who adopted her and gave her a wonderful last year of her life, taking her on adventures and giving her the most joyful last months and days. It is so heartening to know that there are loving adopters like Janet and Peter who are willing to open their hearts and home to an elderly dog.
